What is RSS?

26 June, 2008 - General Business - No Comments

RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is a method of sharing content from a Web site.

The Old Internet

In times gone by, the only way to find new updates on your favourite blogs and news Web sites was to bookmark the site then visit the Web site each day to see if there was anything new. Each time there was no new content, that time spent checking was time wasted in your day.

The New Internet

And so arrived RSS. Rather than you going to the content each day, the content comes to you. Each time new content is added to a blog or Web site that you’re subscribed to, you are made aware by the RSS technology.

How Do I Use RSS?

The first thing you need to do is get yourself a reader. This is the place where your RSS subscriptions will be displayed when they are updated. Google Reader is preferred by most of my subscribers. Sign Up for a Google Account and Start Using Google Reader.

RSS IconThe next thing you need to do is subscribe to an RSS feed. Usually, this is done by clicking the strange looking icon to the left of this text. Most Web sites that use RSS will have this icon somewhere (usually in their header, or sidebar). Simply click the icon to add the feed to your Google Reader account. On this blog, you can click the orange “Subscribe” text in the right sidebar.

Subscribing Via Email

If you would rather not sign up for a reader, you can usually subscribe via email. Once you have entered your email address in the blog subscription form, you will receive an email each time an update is made to the blog. To subscribe to my blog using your email address, enter your email address in the box above the orange “What is RSS?” link and then press enter. Or do the same in the form below:
