Stepping in to Your Perfect Day

I wake up. The faint glow of a new sun is hitting the wall in front of me, softly flowing in from the window behind me. I don’t sleep with a blind covering my window. I like to wake up when the natural light tells me it’s time.

I turn over on to my stomach and look out the window. It’s a perfectly clear day. Not a cloud in sight. The glow is rising over the calm ocean. I see surfers laying on their boards, paddling at a medium pace as they try to catch an early morning wave. They welcome the new day in their own special way. Suddenly, a surfer pops up. Bang. Game on. He’s awake. As he moves back and forth on the wave, I jump up out of bed and watch him. He catapults off the back of the wave, doing a 360 at the same time. He punches the air with delight. First wave of the day.

I walk downstairs and out on to the quiet road parallel to the beach. I cross, and touch the sand for the first time today. It’s cool. All heat and signs of the previous day lost overnight. The surfers are still there. More arriving now, but still only six or seven. They all sound happy. They laugh. They shake hands, in the way only a surfer can. Firm, but informal. They take a moment to look at the sun before slowly walking down to the water. No hesitation. They’re in.

As the surfers paddle out to meet the others, I start to stretch. First my arms. Then my legs. I walk down to the waters edge, then start jogging towards to the left. I pass a few dog walkers and early contemplators. We exchange words as we pass. Everybody talks to each other at this time in a morning. It’s like only happy people are awake.

I jog up and down the beach a couple times. As I get to the right side, I can just barely see the surfers. Now, they look like small dolphins playing in the surf.

After my jog, I go for a swim. I walk in to the water and join several other early morning swimmers. All of them are much older than me. 50’s and 60’s. We swim up and down, stopping before we enter the surf zone.

After a few steady, smooth lengths, I reach the surfers end. I hear one of the swimmers talking to a surfer. The swimmer is asking the young guy if he can take him in on his board. He’s done a little too much swimming, and although not in trouble, he can feel himself getting tired and would rather be safe than sorry. Without hesitation, the surfer slides off his board and lets the 60 something man jump on. The man paddles in with the surfer now swimming by his side. As they reach shore, the man thanks him and shakes his hand. “Anytime”, I hear from the surfer. Two age generations coming together to help each other. That was nice to see.

I head back to shore. 8am now. As I dry off, I take one last look at the surfers. So free. So happy. I walk up the beach and back on to the quiet road. As I head back home, I see Jimmy’s deli across the street. I walk in and buy some fruit for breakfast. I’m on first name basis with all the staff. I’m a daily regular, like most of Jimmy’s customers.

Once home, I change in to my work clothes. Fortunately, I have the pleasure of working for myself. Writing and networking all day long. I work in an office with several other freelancers and new media specialists. Bloggers. Networkers. Writers. Freelance journalists. They’re all very positive, happy people. It’s a fantastic buzz in the office. Everybody smiling. Everybody enjoying the freedom of working for yourself.

The Perfect Day

That was my perfect day. Or half day.

It was my good blogging friend, Cath Lawson, who inspired me to write about my perfect day. Cath asked her readers where, in the perfect world, they would want to be in 10 years time.

What would be your perfect day? Where would you wake up? What would you see? Who would you interact with? How many parts of your perfect day are you living right now?

Jamie:

I like to start my day with one of you inspiring posts! I almost felt the warm sun on your beautiful beach.

The only thing different I would change about my perfect world is my career. In 10 yrs time I will be celebrating an anniversary of my full time blogging career - maybe an 8 year anniversary!

Have a great perfect day!

Hey Dee,

Wow. An eight year blogging anniversary would be fantastic. I can’t wait until I’m at that point. :)

I’m a little confused. Is this happening now or is it your visualisation? It sure sounds perfect, though!! I like the part about the blogging community :-)

You will be in Australia soon, it wont be too long before your visualization becomes reality.

Hi Jamie - thanks for linking to my post. I’m glad it inspired you to write this, it was excellent. I loved how you had the younger surfer helping the old guy out.

In my perfect day, I would walk along the beach before work. I’d work from home - and I’d have my own office, with a view of the sea and mountains. I’d finish early afternoon, so I could swim in the sea with my kids when they finished school. And in the evening, I’d play tennis with my husband.

Hey Cath,

You’re post was excellent. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

Swimming and tennis in the afternoon sounds excellent. Maybe we could play doubles. I’ll borrow one of the surfers as my partner. :D

Jamie, I wish the perfect day always happen to me everyday too :)…But I think I maybe get bored if everyday running well like your imagination. Do you think so?

Exercise can certainly get boring after a while, so I guess I would mix it up a little… like I do right now. Sometimes a run. Sometimes a bike ride. Sometimes a walk. Sometimes a swim. :)

Thanks for the comment, Susan. What would your perfect day be like?
