Anybody who knows John Chow will know he likes to refer to himself as a dot com mogul. It even says so in his logo.

Well, I’m hear to share some ‘worrying’ news. John Chow is not a dot com mogul, and he says so himself. (Isn’t that worrying? It’s got me shaking in my boots!)
I’ve been going through John’s old blog posts today, right back to 2005. There’s some interesting material from John back then. And yes, he even had the restaurant reviews in 2005.
I came across one particular post that sparked my interest. Posted in September 2006, John wrote Requirements To Be a Dot Com Mogul.
The requirements are, as laid out by the so called mogul himself:
John meets most of those requirements, but there is one where he fails.
“A Google search of your name must be at the #1 spot”
Sorry John. You fail. A Google search of your name shows you nowhere. Not a huge surprise for those of us who know your history with the search engine, but still a big mogul fail.
I say the Dot Com Pho group debate John’s mogul status this weekend. Mogul or no mogul? You decide.

And there ends my cheesy link bait. I’ll see you all tomorrow for a look in to the future of your blog.

Hi Jamie. Well, I guess I’m not a Dot Com Mogul. I do update my blog at least once per week, and my name is all over Google. Do I want to be a Dot Com Mogul…? Hmmm.

Do you want to be a dot com mogul? Probably not, Davina.
I think we’ll leave it to the boys who have fast cars and fast dollars.
Hi Jamie - well spotted. I don’t think he’s even on the first page for it anymore. Rules for a dotcom mogul - don’t use dodgy linking competitions.
Am off to tweet this now.
Hey Cath,
Nope, John’s not on the first page. In fact, he’s nowhere to be seen in Google. (They effectively removed his site from their search engine).
Thanks for the Tweet.
WOW!
I know why I am not the DOT COM Mogul. The only requirement that I can’t match is the US$10,000.
I have all the requirements except that one.
My name is, however, #1 on almost all the search engines.
I am pretty close to be DOT COM Mogul, am I?

Hey Terence,
I’m almost a dot com mogul too.
One day we’ll be moguls, I’m sure. Maybe John will still be trying…
I myself am not a dot com mogul but who can we really call a dot com mogul? John Chow is close to being one and I think most people’s problem is reaching $10k/month.
I did find it funny that John Cow showed up as #1 in the Google search for John Chow

Personally, real dot com mogul don’t have to have blog to claim such position. There are many people out there making $400K / month on Internet.
Just like John Chow’s newest blog post. He said that how much money you make is not the key factor to measure your success. It’s how much you give.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I wonder if you can be a .co.uk or a .net mogul???

Ahem… “,,,we’ll leave it to the boys who have fast cars and fast dollars.” Ok, now I want to be a dot com mogul. Then I’ll go out with my fast dollars and buy a fast car.
Davinas last blog post..When Fear Closes In, Take Action
Well, since I made the rules for being a dot com mogul, I can change the rules.
John Chows last blog post..Bright Nights In Stanley Park
Ha. I guess John Chow will raise the bar and make it harder.

Dude, this post is hilarious. According to those criteria, I guess I am a dot-com mogul. It is official. Good to know.

Ah, crap! Wait, some artist with the same name comes in as #1 in Google. I’m #2. Crap!
This means war.

haha. Unlucky David.
Hope you get in to #1 soon.
[...] I found a pretty funny post over at the blog of Jamie Harrop. He uses John Chow’s own criteria for being a dot-com mogul [...]
I always find it strange about this John Chow not being at the number one spot on google for his name search. I always get johnchow.com as number one when i search his name (i’m searching from St.Kitts in the caribbean) and i’ve asked friends in the UK to do the same with the same results as me. I’m guessing this block is only for searches originating from the US and Canada, so if that’s the case he can still be considered a dot com mogul
Bretts last blog post..Market Crash best time to build your business!
Hey Brett,
Nope, it’s happening in the UK too. (I’m in the UK). John is completely banned from Google.
Are you sure it’s not JohnCow (Cow, not Chow) that you’re seeing in 1st position? That’s what I’m seeing, but JohnCow is a totally different blog to John Chow’s blog.
Sounds like this dot com mogul thing is a pretty good gig. My blog doesn’t make 10k a month but luckily I’m employed elsewhere.
