Breast Cancer Awareness Month

7 October, 2008 - Misc - 2 Comments

Breast Cancer AwarenessThis month is the International Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK and almost 46,000 new cases are diagnosed every year.

Sadly one in nine women will develop breast cancer at some point in their lives and more than 12,300 women in the UK still die of breast cancer each year. Men can also get breast cancer but it is rare (around 300 cases are diagnosed each year).

Pink Avatars

Breast Cancer AvatarThere are a number of things going on around the blogosphere to mark the month, including avatars and gravatars in comments and social networking sites such as Twitter being turned pink. If you’re not pink, now would be a good time to change. If you’re unsure how to turn your avatar pink, email it to me ( me @ jamieharrop.com ) and I’ll change it for you and send it back to you.

Flickr Donations

Yahoo! have set up a flickr group for pink pictures in October. For every pink photo uploaded to the group, Yahoo! will donate €1 to Cancer Research UK, the largest single funder of breast cancer research in the UK, up to a maximum of €30,000. €10,000 has already been raised. Upload your pink photos now! More info

If you’re unable to donate, please spread the word. Bloggers have a unique ability to take something viral, and there’s nothing more deserving than this awareness month.

This is awesome, Jamie! I agree… you know, no matter what your blog discusses, this is a life issue that effects everyone.

Hey VeRonda,

I couldn’t agree more. When it comes to charity of this sort, all issues of blog topic go out the window. :)
