The ‘Best Comment Awards’

Today is the end of the work week and I’m having a day of reflection.

I’ve spent the day looking at photos from my past. Mainly photos from the trip to Switzerland I organised for my Scouts in 2006. It was really nice to look back on those photos and see so many smiling young people as a result of my work.

All this reflection got me thinking about the past of this blog. Specifically, the past of the people that make the blog. You! My commentators. The people who motivate and inspire me to continue writing.

With this in mind, I went back through all my comments since June 2007 when I started this blog and I’ve picked my three favourites.

The Motivating and Inspiring Comments

As it happened, both these comments come from the story of my flight to Toronto. Some people would argue this is my best post on the whole blog, even if it isn’t completely on topic. The post tells the story of my flight to Toronto in 2005, soon after the Air France 358 crash. I set out to tell a factual story of a somewhat normal and insignificant flight in a gripping, suspense thriller. Apparently, I succeeded. Here are two of my favourite motivating and inspiring comments from this blog:

Gyutae Park said…

“You should write fiction or something. That was a very gripping story. Sounds like you have a very interesting tale to tell.”

It’s a really simple comment but it meant a lot to me. After publishing the post I thought I had failed in creating a gripping story, but without prompt from me Gyutae described it exactly how I wanted it to be described. Thanks Gyutae! You made my day, and I still refer to that comment as my favourite.

The next comment comes from my good friend, Tjobbe Andrews. Again, this was on the post about my flight to Toronto. Read it all, but pay particular attention to the second to last paragraph. It’s such a powerful sentence.

Tjobbe Andrews said…

“That actually was a very good read Jamie!

My story? I was in my last job, nearly a year ago now, and getting blasted every day by my boss, who was an awful person to work for, probably because he was an awful person, no one single person has ever knocked my confidence as much as he did.

I started in that particular job full of confidence and got worse and worse as time went on simply because I got so scared of making mistakes. Then one day I made a huge one and was told to leave there and then.

Money was tight so I had to get a temping job, using my Dutch language skills I was employed in a very demeaning call centre environment and told to ring companies in the Netherlands and ask them if they wanted to buy something I knew absolutely nothing about. I *hated* it.

I got home and nearly cried, it took me a while to find something and I was in the stage of not knowing what else I could do, and then something inside me clicked.

I thought, why cold call for somebody else when I can cold call for myself?

I spent the next week on and off the phone from home using up what free minutes I had on my mobile phone until I bagged myself five new clients, and I have not until now, had to ever use cold calling again, but now I have to (things are a little quiet) I know that I can do it.”

The Most Entertaining Comment

As well as the serious, you have wrote your fair share of entertaining comments.

The award for most entertaining comment goes to my good friend and customer, Ross Chapman. He wrote a comment way back in June 2007 as I discussed the results of my first week of blogging.

About my black and white video blogs, Ross Chapman said…

Power Rock! Swwweeeeeet!

So, in your video blogs, have you been transported back in time to a point where colour no longer exists in the audio visual experience? If so, you must have the genius of Doctor Emmett Brown! Joking aside - great 1st blog, but you might wanna see someone about that microphone stuck to your chin!

Thanks Ross! I laugh each time I read that comment.

Those are just a small portion of the fantastic comments you have contributed. Please keep contributing in your own unique way. I appreciate them all and the warm, fuzzy feeling inside when I see a new comment will never fade away. Thank you!

What are the best comments you have received on your blog? Do you still get excited to see new comments? Share your story with us in the comments below.

Hey man,
No problem. I just tell it how it is, but I’m glad the comment was motivating for you. :)

Keep up the good posts.
