I’ve been diligently working on my new blog theme today to a point where it is now 10:15pm and I have the shakes. I’ve spent far too long looking at this laptop today, but it has had one benefit.
The Small Things
I’ve been hopping from blog to blog all day looking at what other bloggers use in their designs. Where their ad placements are, where their content is and what content they have just to name a few. And then I got to my Web site footer. What do other bloggers have in their footer, I thought to myself. So off I went to check. I looked at John Chow’s site. ProBlogger. Skellie. Shoemoney. Caroline. Liz. The list goes on.
Copyright 2007?
Then I noticed something. Most of the blogs I went to that had a copyright statement in their footer were still publishing “Copyright 2007″. We’re in 2008 now, people. And unless your blog hasn’t updated since 2007, it’s time to get that footer updated.
Then I Went Red In The Face
I looked at my footer and it seems I was still stuck in last year too. But apparently it’s an easy thing to forget. Skellie forgot. So did Shoemoney. Not to mention Courtney, The Cow and Tyler. So it got me thinking, how can I make my life easier in the long run? Easy! Automate the update each year.
Automate The Update
All it takes is some very simple PHP. Open up your WordPress file that holds your footer statement and replace the footer text with this:
Just replace “Company Name” with your name and you’re all set. Each year your copyright statement will automatically update and your blog will avoid looking like you’re 12 month old dress. Yes, men, you’re dress too.

Already ahead of you there :P, had that PHP script in my blog’s footer for a while now. phew.
I know how you feel with the re-design. I’ve spent the last week going through our business site - http://www.glassobelisk.com.au - redoing it. Now I just have to finish writing a mountain of content for it. If you have any thoughts on it, feel free to email me too Jamie, would appreciate the feedback.
*hands shake* time to get off the computer and have a break I think…
Thank you for reminding us to update the copyright. Oftenly forget that now is 2008 and most of blogs have not yet up dated.
I don’t have a date on my copyright footer…weird.
