So many questions, so few words. That’s the basis of my new post series, called Quick Community Questions, or QCQ for short.
The idea is to ask you, my humble, dedicated, passionate readers, a quick question that will hopefully prompt answers and discussion in the comments.
For this first question, I want to focus on what you do when you subscribe to a new feed.
Question: - When you subscribe to a new RSS feed, do you ever read the archived posts that are displayed in your reader?
I’ll start the discussion with my answer in the comments. Please join in by telling us whether you read the posts when you subscribe, or whether you just delete them and wait for the next post.

It’s very rare that I read any of the posts in my reader when I subscribe to a new feed. I often feel overwhelmed by the amount that are displayed. In the past, I’ve subscribed to a feed, only to see 30 posts appear in my reader. It’s much more likely that I’ll read them if only a few, five at the most, appear in my reader. Although even then I’m usually lazy and wait for the next post.
Hi Jamie
When a blog is so interesting I subscribe to the feed then yes I will read the 10 posts that land in my reader. It does give me a better feeling to A) in what category to put the blog and B) if it’s worth my time to continue reading new posts as soon as they arrive in my reader.
So I will read you 10 latest posts

Hey Karin,
Thanks for stopping by. It always gives me a warm, fuzzy feeling inside to see a new face write a comment on my blog.
The reasons you give for reading those posts make perfect sense. I guess I just got in to the habit of deleting them due to pure laziness.
Thanks for subscribing, by the way.
I just subscribed to your blog and my worst nightmare occurred… I got bombarded with 30 posts.
Alright, you made the effort to read my posts, so I’ll make the effort to read yours. That’s only fair, right?
Hi Jamie
I’ll settle for 10 of my posts to be read by you
Karin H.
Deal! And they were a fantastic read too, Karin. I was going to comment on a couple but they were about a month old, so it just didn’t feel right. Another topic for another day… is it right to comment on archived blog posts?
Usually. I only sybscribe to the feeds I like tho, so it’s not like this is a particularly big chore! Sometimes I just read the first three, and then click “mark all as read”. It depends on wether(sp?) ir not I feel as tho theri archives have anything of value.
Hey Ayomide,
It’s nice to see a comment from you again.
Thanks for your input. I appreciate it.
Hi Jamie
I think it depends if your comment could still add to the ‘conversation’, but agree that most times it doesn’t feel right.
Karin H.
I normally will go through and read most of the posts. It might be a bit of a skim-read, but I still go through each one.
