Public speaking is a fantastic way to get new business, especially if you are in a business to business (BtoB) industry.
There are a whole boat load of public speaking opportunities out there. From a local coffee shop at a lunch time, to being in a classroom at your local Chamber of Commerce headquarters, all the way up to speaking at conferences and conventions.
My only experience of public speaking on a B2B level has been when I have had the balls to open my voice at marketing and sales courses. I got to speak for five minutes at a time in front of a group of 30 people. The buzz I got from that was amazing, but it’s a whole different ball game when you’re the primary speaker in front of 50, 100 or 200 people.
And it’s that ball game that I want to play. Over the course of the next 12 months, I’ll be making arrangements for several public speaking opportunities, both in a small coffee shop style environment, and at larger venues such as HostingCon. I’ll be talking about several subjects, mainly Web development related, but I may extend in to blog discussions at HostingCon.
This is going to be a whole new area for me, so it will be very much trial and error. Of course, I’ll be sharing my experiences with you as I go.
If public speaking is something you would like to do in the future, Brendon Sinclair at Tailored Consulting has wrote an ebook dedicated to the subject . I have a copy, and it’s worth every penny of the small fee that it costs! (Edit: Brendon just emailed me with a link to the ebook for free, specifically for my readers. Thanks Brendon!) Brendon does his fair share of public speaking and from what I have seen and heard, he isn’t half bad at it
Have you ever done any public speaking? Is it something you have considered, or would like to do in future?
Editors Note: No, I really don’t have “a thing” for Brendon. Seriously… somebody emailed me earlier today to ask if I had a love triangle with Brendon and Jane May. Sorry folks. They just get plenty of plugs from me because they put out quality content.
