What Turns You On?

25 June, 2007 - Motivation - 12 Comments

AirplaneStephen Welton, a fellow entrepreneur and blogger, has posed the question of what inspires us each day. I’m going to set out and try to answer that question.

When I was thinking about my answer to this, I realised that there are many things that inspire me and turn me on ( In an entrepreneurial sort of way, of course! :D ), but the one thing that really stands out above all the rest is the thought of travel.

I realised that I live for travel

As I sat and thought, I realised that I live for travel. I absolutely love travelling.

  • I love packing my suitcase.
  • I love the early morning start.
  • I love the way the airport transfer bus pulls up outside my house and the driver gets out in his shorts and sandals, like he’s silently saying, “I wish I was going with you”.
  • I love the way at check in I’m greeted with the biggest smile the employee can force at 6:30am and I’m asked how I am and where I’m going.
  • I love the atmosphere of the airport. Everybody is stressed, but we all know we’re going somewhere far superior to where we currently are.
  • I love purchasing my hard boiled sweets before the flight.
  • I love the air bridge which takes me from the terminal to the plane.
  • I even love the atmosphere of the plane. So loud with the roaring Rolls Royce engines, yet so quiet in a strange and peaceful way. The atmosphere is similar to that of suspense before the start of a show. The lights dim, and everybody prepares for the exciting drama ahead.
  • And yes, I even love the food. The small bread bun with butter which nobody can be bothered to unwrap, cut and spread, and the horrible fruit salad for desert.

It’s all a part of the experience

It’s all a part of the experience. It’s a ritual. It’s a ritual I have performed many times during my life, and on every single occasion at which that ritual has been performed, I have been on my way to a better, brighter, warmer and more comfortable part of the world.

That’s why I love travel! I don’t just love it because of the place I’m going to. I love it because I have to perform that ritual which I associate with some of the best times of my life.

What turns you on and gets you motivated for work? A song? A place? A person? Tell us what really inspires and motivates you.

When it comes to working, I love the end product, I like to have a sense of accomplishment when looking back on a project, knowing that I’ve sweated and laboured for a reason!

As for traveling, i love the feeling of sitting on a plane when I’m tired, it’s a completely unique feeling, and also knowing that my friends and family are probably at work or something, and also how small the world feels..

I can literally hear the excitement while reading your response Jamie. It’s that excitement that is driving you.

The question I pose now is when is your next trip?

Been to Canada yet?

I get inspired each day if I can get just one person to “see it”. To see that anything is possible for them if they just want it and “decide to start”.

Thanks Stephen. :)

I’m flying out to Ohio next month to spend a week with my business partner. We’ll be driving to Chicago for HostingCon (Web hosting conference). :)

I was in Toronto in August 05. I spent five nights there and met a number of my online friends (One of my friends from the International Web Developers Network put on a BBQ for us all).

I was considering flying up to Toronto to spend a couple nights at the end of my trip to Ohio next month but I haven’t made any decisions yet. It probably won’t happen, but that only gives me an excuse to go back to Toronto some time in the future. :)

Jamie you really turn me on ( In an entrepreneurial sort of way).

I use to get really excitied for travel when I was younger, I don’t get to travel much anymore, hopefully that will change very soon. I was actually pricing out 2 weeks in England last night, then I realized how expensive you buggers are. :P

What really gets me going is having an idea that I just have to get down onto paper or the screen and I can’t sleep or think about anything else until I have it all laid out. Some of these ideas become a reality but many of them end of getting filed away, if only I have more time and money.

For a moment there, I thought you had left Denise and gone “that way”.

You were pricing out a trip to England? Dayum! Get yourself over here!

Flight for $821.50 CAD in mid-August from Canadian Affair ( http://www.canadian-affair.ca ). Get yourself a hotel from PriceLine, and you’re all set. :D Heck, do a little camping to save on costs. We have plenty of fantastic campsites. ;)

Of course, you could just come to Northern England where everything is half as expensive as London (but still twice as expensive as Canada. )

Hehe, yeah half as expensive than London but about 8 times more expensive than any other country in the world lol

We can’t go in August, kind of getting married then. We were thinking of going for our honeymoon but we plan on doing that in November-December which is that exciting of a time weather wise in England. The flights are not too bad it’s everything else after that, your pound is too strong compared our dollar. It makes everything cost twice as much.

I went to England and Scotland when I was 12, Denise wants to go but she would like to see Paris and maybe Italy as well. Maybe some day soon it will all work out.

Well, if you ever do decide to make the trip, take a look at CanadianAffair or ZoomAirlines for some great flights.

I flew with Zoom when I went to Toronto and despite them being a budget airline, they were the best I have ever flown with. :)

Of course, let me know if/when you make the arrangements. I’ll give you the grand tour of Northern England. :D

Maybe the in-laws will give us a big cheque to go on our honeymoon with. lol

You’ll have to give us the grand tour of the cows, farms and pubs of Nothern England. :)

Heh. Pubs for sure!

Seriously, if you ever make it you should spend a few days in York. There’s a thread about my day trip there on IWDN. It’s a lovely place full of history. :)

Even more seriously… I’ll take you out for a real pint or ten at a good ol’ English country pub. :D

I love the feeling you get when you achieve a goal, and the best thing that gets me working is putting headphones on, blaring some music and to work until it’s done.

I haven’t been doing that as much as I should actually, I’m doing it now for the first time in a week (too long I know)

[...] know what you’re thinking… Jamie went all sex on you again. First I asked what turns you on, and now I tell you I suck and I love it. Well, you’ll be pleased to hear I haven’t [...]
